Theatre By The Sea (TBTS) is seeking a Technical Director for its 2026 summer season. This role oversees the safe, efficient installation, operation, and maintenance of scenic elements for a four-show musical season. Scenery is primarily designed and built offsite; the Technical Director focuses on load-ins, assembly, troubleshooting, show support, crew supervision, and scenic maintenance.
All scenic installations at TBTS require the use of a hemp rigging system; applicants must be knowledgeable and comfortable operating a hemp rigging system.
This is a hands-on leadership position well-suited to someone who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced summer stock theatre environment and works effectively across departments.

Primary Responsibilities
- Supervise all scenic load-ins, changeovers, installations, and strike
- Oversee daily scenic operations during tech and performances
- Manage and support scenic run crew, deck crew, and fly crew
- Coordinate closely with the Production Manager, Scenic Designer, Artistic Director
- Collaborate with the Production Manager to plan scenic installations, determine overhire and crew needs, and develop production schedules that support safe, efficient workflows across departments
- Communicate proactively regarding staffing needs, scheduling concerns, and potential conflicts throughout the season
- Coordinate and assist with the transportation of scenic and prop elements between the rehearsal studio and the theatre
- Ensure safe working practices and maintain a clean, organized backstage environment
- Troubleshoot scenic and mechanical issues during rehearsals and performances
- Maintain scenic elements throughout the run of each production
- Oversee the scenic build, which takes place off-site prior to the start of the season.
- Prior experience as a Technical Director or Assistant Technical Director in regional or summer stock theatre
- Strong knowledge of stage tools and machinery, working experience with hemp rigging systems, and scenic installation
- Ability to read, interpret, and work from scenic drafting and groundplans; drafting experience preferred
- Working knowledge of lighting and audio systems sufficient to coordinate installation schedules and support cross-department collaboration
- Ability to lead crews with clarity, calm, and respect
- Comfortable working across prep, tech, and run phases of production
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
- Valid driver+rsquo;s license and comfort operating production vehicles (including box trucks) preferred
- Availability prior to the start of the season to oversee the scenic build
- Full-season commitment required (including load-in and load-out)
- Positions are scheduled for 40 hours per week
- Evening and weekend work required based on rehearsal, performance, and production schedules
- Overtime is limited, requires prior approval, and is typically confined to technical rehearsal and changeover weeks
